McLean County is a county in the US state of Kentucky . The county seat is Calhoun . The county is part of the dry counties , which means that the sale of alcohol is restricted or prohibited.

The county is located in western Kentucky, about 35 km to the north from the state of Illinois and has an area of ​​663 square kilometers, of which five square kilometers are water. It is bordered by counties in a clockwise direction: Henderson County , Daviess County , Ohio County , Muhlenberg County , Hopkins County, and Webster County .

history

McLean County was formed on February 6, 1854 from parts of Daviess County, Muhlenberg County and Ohio County. It was named after Alney McLean , a judge and member of the US Congress .

One site in McLean County has the status of a National Historic Landmark , the Green River Shell Middens Archeological District , because of its special historical significance . A total of nine buildings and sites in the county are registered in the National Register of Historic Places (as of October 12, 2017).

According to the 2000 census , McLean County had 9,938 people in 3,984 households and 2,880 families. The population density was 15 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 98.58 percent white, 0.36 percent African American, 0.16 percent Native American, 0.04 percent Asian, 0.01 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 0.31 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 0.53 percent were descended from two or more races. The median income for a household in the city was $ 29,675 , and the median income for a family was $ 35,322. Males had a median income of $ 28,446 versus $ 19,432 for females.
