McLean County is a county in the US state of Kentucky . The county seat is Calhoun . The county is part of the dry counties , which means that the sale of alcohol is restricted or prohibited.

The county is located in western Kentucky, about 35 km to the north from the state of Illinois and has an area of 663 square kilometers, of which five square kilometers are water. It is bordered by counties in a clockwise direction: Henderson County , Daviess County , Ohio County , Muhlenberg County , Hopkins County, and Webster County .

history

McLean County was formed on February 6, 1854 from parts of Daviess County, Muhlenberg County and Ohio County. It was named after Alney McLean , a judge and member of the US Congress .

One site in McLean County has the status of a National Historic Landmark , the Green River Shell Middens Archeological District , because of its special historical significance . A total of nine buildings and sites in the county are registered in the National Register of Historic Places (as of October 12, 2017).

According to the 2000 census , McLean County had 9,938 people in 3,984 households and 2,880 families. The population density was 15 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 98.58 percent white, 0.36 percent African American, 0.16 percent Native American, 0.04 percent Asian, 0.01 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 0.31 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 0.53 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 0.84 percent of the population.

Of the 3,984 households, 32.3 percent had children and young people under the age of 18 living with them. 60.0 percent were married couples living together, 8.7 percent were single mothers, 27.7 percent were non-families, 24.7 percent were single households, and 11.4 percent had people aged 65 years or over. The average household size was 2.47 and the average family size was 2.93.

For the entire county, the population was composed of 24.2 percent of residents under 18 years of age, 8.3 percent between 18 and 24 years of age, 27.7 percent between 25 and 44 years of age, 25.4 percent between 45 and 64 years of age 14.5 percent were 65 years of age or over. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females there were 96.4 males. For every 100 women aged 18 or over there were statistically 93.2 men.

The median income for a household in the city was $ 29,675 , and the median income for a family was $ 35,322. Males had a median income of $ 28,446 versus $ 19,432 for females. The per capita income was $ 16,046. 13.7 percent of families and 16.0 percent of the population are below the poverty line. Of these, 21.1 percent were children or young people under the age of 18 and 18.5 percent were people over 65 years of age.
