Powell County is a county in the state of Kentucky in the United States . The county seat is Stanton , named after Richard H. Stanton , a member of the US Congress . The county is part of the dry counties , which means that the sale of alcohol is restricted or prohibited.

The county is located in northeastern Kentucky and covers an area of ​​467 square kilometers with no significant body of water. It is bordered in a clockwise direction by the following counties: Montgomery County , Menifee County , Wolfe County , Lee County , Estill County, and Clark County .

history

Powell County was formed on January 7, 1852 from parts of Clark County, Estill County and Montgomery County. It was named after Lazarus W. Powell , a governor and US senator .
