Pulaski County is a county in the state of Kentucky in the United States . The county seat is Somerset . The county is part of the dry counties , which means that the sale of alcohol is restricted or prohibited.

The county is located southeast of the geographic center of Kentucky, is about 40 km to the south from the state of Tennessee and has an area of 1754 square kilometers, of which 40 square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Lincoln County , Rockcastle County , Laurel County , McCreary County , Wayne County , Russell County, and Casey Counties .
history
Pulaski County was formed on September 10, 1798 from parts of Green County and Lincoln County. It was named after Kazimierz Pułaski (English Casimir Pulaski ), who supported the American colonists in the American War of Independence and was killed in the process. During the Civil War , a battle between Union forces and Confederates took place around Mill Springs and in Wayne County on January 19, 1862, which ended in a Union victory and claimed about 670 deaths.
The Mill Springs Battlefield has the status of a National Historic Landmark because of its special historical significance . A total of 40 buildings and sites in the county are registered in the National Register of Historic Places (as of October 19, 2017).

According to the 2000 census , Pulaski County had 56,217 people in 22,719 households and 16,334 families. The population density was 33 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 97.48 percent white, 1.07 percent African American, 0.22 percent Native American, 0.37 percent Asian, 0.02 percent from the Pacific island area and 0.17 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 0.67 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 0.81 percent of the population.
Of the 22,719 households, 31.2 percent had children and young people under the age of 18 living with them. 58.5 percent were married couples living together, 10.1 percent were single mothers, 28.1 percent were non-families, 24.9 percent were single households and 10.8 percent had people aged 65 years or over. The average household size was 2.42 and the average family size was 2.87 people.
For the entire county, the population was composed of 23.4 percent of residents under the age of 18, 8.0 percent between 18 and 24 years of age, 28.6 percent between 25 and 44 years of age, and 24.9 percent between 45 and 64 years of age 15.1 percent were 65 years of age or over. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females there were 95.6 males. For every 100 women 18 years of age or older there were statistically 91.9 men.
The median income for a household in the 27,370 USD , and the median income for a family was 32,350 USD. Males had a median income of $ 27,398 versus $ 19,236 for females. The per capita income was $ 15,352. 14.8 percent of families and 19.1 percent of the population were below the poverty line. Of these, 26.9 percent were children or adolescents under the age of 18 and 16.6 percent were people over 65 years of age.
