Jefferson County is a county in the state of Kentucky in the United States . The administrative seat ( county seat ) is Louisville , which after King Louis XVI. was named by France .

geography

The county is in north-central Kentucky and borders the state of Indiana in the northwest, separated by the Ohio River . Of its total area of ​​1032 square kilometers, 35 square kilometers are water. In Kentucky, it is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Oldham County , Shelby County , Spencer County , Bullitt County, and Hardin Counties .

Jefferson County was formed on May 1, 1780 as the original county from the Virginia Territory. It was named after President Thomas Jefferson .

According to the 2000 census , Jefferson County had 693,604 people in 287,012 households and 183,113 families. The population density was 695 inhabitants per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 77.38 percent white, 18.88 percent African American, 0.22 percent Native American, 1.39 percent Asian, 0.04 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 0.68 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 1.42 percent were descended from two or more races. The median income for a household in the county is $ 39,457 , and the median income for a family is $ 49,161. Males had a median income of $ 36,484 versus $ 26,255 for females.
