Jessamine County is a county in the state of Kentucky in the United States . The county seat is Nicholasville , named after George Nicholas , an attorney general.

The county is located northeast of the geographic center of Kentucky and has an area of ​​452 square kilometers, of which three square kilometers are water. It is bordered in a clockwise direction by the following counties: Fayette County , Madison County , Garrard County , Mercer County, and Woodford Counties .

history

Jessamine County was formed on December 19, 1798 from parts of Fayette County. It was named after the jasmine that grew abundantly here at the time .

As of the 2000 census , there were 39,041 people in 13,867 households and 10,663 families in Jessamine County. The population density was 87 inhabitants per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 94.44 percent white, 3.13 percent African American, 0.20 percent Native American, 0.58 percent Asian, 0.03 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 0.47 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 1.14 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 1.31 percent of the population.

Of the 13,867 households, 38.8 percent had children and young people under the age of 18 living with them. 61.9 percent were married couples living together, 11.1 percent were single mothers, 23.1 percent were non-families, 18.5 percent were single households and 6.5 percent had people aged 65 years or over. The average household size was 2.69 and the average family size was 3.05.

For the entire county, the population was composed of 26.4 percent of residents under 18 years of age, 11.6 percent between 18 and 24 years of age, 31.1 percent between 25 and 44 years of age, 21.4 percent between 45 and 64 years of age 9.5 percent were 65 years of age or over. The median age was 33 years. For every 100 females there were 96.6 males. For every 100 women aged 18 or over there were statistically 92.8 men.

The median income for a household in the 40,096 USD , and the median income for a family was 46,152 USD. Males had a median income of $ 32,340 versus $ 23,771 for females. The per capita income was $ 18,842. 8.4 percent of families and 10.5 percent of the population were below the poverty line.
