Perry County is a county in the state of Kentucky in the United States . The county seat is Hazard .

The county is located in eastern Kentucky, about 20 km to the southeast from Virginia , and has an area of 887 square kilometers, of which one square kilometer is water. It is bordered by counties in a clockwise direction: Breathitt County , Knott County , Letcher County , Harlan County , Leslie County, and Clay County .
history
Perry County was formed on November 2, 1820 from parts of Clay County and Floyd County. It was named after Commodore Oliver Hazard Perry , a navy war hero of 1812.

According to the 2000 census , Perry County had 29,390 people in 11,460 households and 8,491 families. The population density was 33 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 97.34 percent white, 1.64 percent African American, 0.05 percent Native American, 0.49 percent Asian, 0.01 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 0.04 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 0.43 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 0.52 percent of the population.
Of the 11,460 households, 34.2 percent had children and young people under the age of 18 living with them. 56.7 percent were married couples living together, 13.2 percent were single mothers, 25.9 percent were non-families, 23.3 percent were single households and 9.3 percent had people aged 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.53 and the average family size was 2.98 people.
For the entire county, the population was composed of 24.4 percent of residents under the age of 18, 9.1 percent between 18 and 24 years of age, 30.7 percent between 25 and 44 years of age, and 24.6 percent between 45 and 64 years of age 11.2 percent were 65 years of age or over. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females there were 94.6 males. For every 100 women 18 years of age or older, there were 91.3 men statistically.
The median income for a household in the 22,089 US dollars , and the median income for a family was 26,718 USD. Males had a median income of $ 31,702 versus $ 20,502 for females. The per capita income was $ 12,224. 26.1 percent of families and 29.1 percent of the population are below the poverty line. Of these, 36.0 percent were children or adolescents under 18 years of age and 20.6 percent were people over 65 years of age.
