Green County is a county in the state of Kentucky in the United States . The administrative seat ( county seat ) is Greensburg .

The county is just south of the geographic center of Kentucky, about 75 km to the south from Tennessee , and covers an area of ​​748 square kilometers with no significant body of water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: LaRue County , Taylor County , Adair County , Metcalfe County, and Hart County .

history

Green County was formed on December 20, 1792 from parts of Lincoln County and Nelson County. It was named after Nathaniel Greene , a general in the American Revolutionary War .

According to the 2000 census , Green County had 11,518 people in 4,706 households and 3,378 families. The population density was 15 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 96.19 percent white, 2.61 percent African American, 0.10 percent Native American, 0.13 percent Asian and 0.31 percent from other ethnic groups; 0.65 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 0.95 percent of the population.

Of the 4,706 households, 29.9 percent had children and young people under the age of 18 living with them. 59.7 percent were married couples living together, 8.5 percent were single mothers, 28.2 percent were non-families, 25.4 percent were single households and 13.2 percent had people aged 65 years or over. The average household size was 2.41 and the average family size was 2.87 people.

For the entire county, the population was composed of 22.7 percent of residents under 18 years of age, 8.1 percent between 18 and 24 years of age, 26.8 percent between 25 and 44 years of age, 25.4 percent between 45 and 64 years of age 16.9 percent were 65 years of age or over. The average age was 40 years. For every 100 females there were 96.9 males. For every 100 women 18 years of age or older there were statistically 91.9 men.

The median income for a household in the city was $ 25,463 , and the median income for a family was $ 31,852. Males had a median income of $ 25,764 versus $ 17,510 for females. The per capita income was $ 16,107. 15.2 percent of families and 18.4 percent of the population were below the poverty line. Of these, 23.1 percent were children or adolescents under the age of 18 and 18.5 percent were people over 65 years of age.
