Woodford County is a county in the state of Kentucky in the United States . The county seat is Versailles . The county is part of the dry counties , which means that the sale of alcohol is restricted or prohibited.

The county is located northeast of the geographic center of Kentucky and has an area of ​​497 square kilometers, of which three square kilometers are water. It is bordered by counties in a clockwise direction: Franklin County , Scott County , Fayette County , Jessamine County , Mercer County, and Anderson Counties .

history

Woodford County was formed on November 2, 1788 from parts of Fayette County. It was named after General William Woodford , who died in captivity by the British during the American Revolutionary War .

Woodford is home to Kentucky's oldest Kentucky Bourbon Distillery, founded in 1812, Labrot & Graham's Old Oscar Pepper Distillery , renamed Woodford Reserve Distillery since 2003 . Because of its historical significance, it has had the status of a National Historic Landmark since 2000 . A total of 78 buildings and sites in the county are registered in the National Register of Historic Places (as of October 23, 2017).

According to the 2000 census , Woodford County had 23,208 people in 8,893 households and 6,643 families. The population density was 47 inhabitants per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 92.08 percent white, 5.41 percent African American, 0.13 percent Native American, 0.31 percent Asian, 0.01 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 1.13 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 0.93 percent were descended from two or more races. For the entire county, the population was composed of 25.4 percent of residents under 18 years of age, 7.9 percent between 18 and 24 years of age, 31.2 percent between 25 and 44 years of age, 25.1 percent between 45 and 64 years of age 10.4 percent were 65 years of age or over. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females there were 93.0 males. For every 100 women 18 years of age or older there were statistically 91.2 men.

The median income for a household in the county is $ 49,491 , and the median income for a family is $ 58,218. Males had a median income of $ 39,284 versus $ 27,972 for females. The per capita income was $ 22,839. 5.2 percent of families and 7.3 percent of the population were below the poverty line. 8.0 percent of these were children or adolescents under 18 years of age and 13.1 percent were people over 65 years of age.
