Versailles is a city in the US state of Kentucky . It is also the county seat of Woodford County .
At the last census in 2000 it had a population of 7,511.
history
Versailles was founded on June 23, 1792. The area on which it was created belonged to Hezekiah Briscoe, a child at the time. The first mayor of Versailles, Marquis Calmes, named the city after the French city of Versailles out of veneration for General La Fayette . The city was briefly occupied by the troops of the Confederate States as well as the Northern States during the Civil War .
Economy and Infrastructure
In the bluegrass region , Versailles is known for breeding horses . Both English thoroughbreds and American Standardbred are bred very successfully.
The area around the city is still characterized by farms .
The Woodford Reserve Distillery is also a distillery on the Kentucky Bourbon Trail in Versailles.
Parts of the films Elizabethtown and Dreamer were filmed in Versailles .
