Robert K. Massie

Robert Kinloch Massie III (born January 5, 1929 in Versailles , Kentucky , † December 2, 2019 in Irvington , New York ) was an American historian who published several books on the Russian aristocratic Romanov family .

Life

Robert Kinloch Massie III. grew up in Nashville , Tennessee . He studied American and European history at Yale University and, with the help of a Rhodes scholarship, at the University of Oxford . He then became a journalist for Newsweek and The Saturday Evening Post . In 1967 he and his family moved to France. He previously published Nicholas and Alexandra: An Intimate Account of the Last of the Romanovs and the Fall of Imperial Russia , a biography about Nicholas II and Alix von Hessen-Darmstadt , the last monarchical rulers of Russia. It represented his breakthrough as a historian and was translated into German and made into a film under the title Nikolaus und Alexandra . In 1995 he published an updated version of his book, The Romanovs: The Final Chapter .

For his second biography, Peter the Great: His Life and World, about Peter I , Massie was awarded a Pulitzer Prize for Best Biography in 1981. Under the title Peter the Great , the book was made into a mini-series in 1986 with actors such as Maximilian Schell , Laurence Olivier and Vanessa Redgrave .

Massie was married twice. From the marriage with the author Suzanne Rohrbach from 1954 to 1990 three children were born. He had another child with his second wife, Deborah L. Karl, with whom he had been married since 1992.
