Vanessa Redgrave
Vanessa Redgrave CBE (born January 30, 1937 in London ) is a British theater and film actress . She won an Oscar in 1978 and is a two-time Golden Globe winner .
Life
Vanessa Redgrave comes from an actor dynasty that was founded by her grandfather Roy Redgrave (1873-1922). Her parents Michael Redgrave and Rachel Kempson and her siblings Lynn Redgrave and Corin Redgrave were also active in the film industry.
After completing her ballet training , she attended the Central School of Speech and Drama, graduating in 1958. In the same year she made her debut in both theater and film alongside her father. Until 1966, she initially played only theater and was celebrated as a talented actress by both audiences and critics . In 1961 she became a member of the renowned theater company Royal Shakespeare Company . Redgrave has received numerous accolades as a stage actress.
As a film and television actress, she has participated in more than 130 productions. In 2017 she made her directorial debut with the documentary Sea Sorrow .
Honors
With her first leading role in Morgan. A Suitable Case For Treatment (German Protest , 1966) her breakthrough in film. In addition to an Oscar nomination , she received the Actor Award at the Cannes Film Festival in 1966 . Michelangelo Antonioni's film Blow Up made her known to a worldwide cinema audience and brought her another award in Cannes. Numerous films followed, for which she received several other nominations and honors, such as the 1978 Oscar for best supporting actress for Fred Zinnemann's Julia and the 1980 Emmy for the television film Playing For Time based on a story by Arthur Miller .
Private life
Vanessa Redgrave was married to director Tony Richardson from 1962 to 1967 . The daughters Natasha Richardson (1963-2009) and Joely Richardson (* 1965), who also became actresses, came from the marriage . Her granddaughter, Daisy Bevan , is also an actress.
After divorcing her husband in 1967, Redgrave had various relationships. Her third child Carlo Gabriel Nero (* 1969) comes from the connection with Franco Nero , whom she married 37 years after the birth of their son in December 2006. Carlo Gabriel Nero is an actor and director.
Political commitment
Vanessa Redgrave is a Trotskyist and also politically active in other ways: She demonstrated against nuclear weapons , against the Vietnam War , for the IRA , for Yasser Arafat and his PLO . The trigger for their political commitment was a famous radio broadcast by the BBC from 1948, which broadcast a radio play version of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights , one of the authors of which was Eleanor Roosevelt .
In 1978, Redgrave received an Oscar for her portrayal of the title role in the film Julia , who was murdered by the Nazi regime during World War II for her anti-fascist activities. Before the award ceremony, members of the Jewish Defense League demonstrated against Vanessa Redgrave and her involvement in the documentary The Palestinians from 1977 and her commitment to the Palestinians. The Academy had received death threats in the run-up to the award ceremony in the event that it was awarded the Oscar. In her acceptance speech at the award ceremony, she condemned all forms of totalitarianism, noting that neither she nor the Academy was intimidated by a "small group of Zionist crooks whose behavior was an attack on the greatness of Jews around the world and the great and heroic Remembering their struggle against fascism and oppression ”.
In the meantime, Redgrave is mainly involved as a UNICEF ambassador and against the Iraq war .
