Natasha Jane Richardson (born May 11, 1963 in London , England , † March 18, 2009 in New York City , New York ) was a British actress .

Life

Natasha Richardson was born in 1963 to actress Vanessa Redgrave and director Tony Richardson . She belonged to one of the most famous English families of actors; this also includes the younger sister Joely Richardson , her daughter Daisy Bevan , the aunt Lynn Redgrave , who died in 2010, and the grandfather Sir Michael Redgrave .

Richardson attended the Central School of Speech and Drama in London. She gained her first stage experience at the Open Air Theater in Regent's Park , where she played the role of "Helena" in William Shakespeare's Midsummer Night 's Dream alongside Ralph Fiennes . In 1985 she was Ophelia in a production of Hamlet at the Young Vic Theater in London. Her breakthrough came in 1985 when she played "Nina" in Chekhov's Die Möwe at the Queen's Theater alongside her mother Vanessa Redgrave and Jonathan Pryce .

In the 1980s she also took on several television roles, including as "Special Guest Star" in the television series Sherlock Holmes as "Violet" in the episode Das Haus zu den Blutbuchen to see. Starting in 1990, she played the title role in Eugene O'Neill's play Anna Christie , also at the Young Vic, for three years before production went to Broadway . For her role as "Sally Bowles" in Sam Mendes' production of Cabaret , she received a Tony and a Drama Desk Award . In 1993 she appeared in the re-production of Anna Christie with Liam Neeson on Broadway, and in 1994 they appeared together in the film Nell . In the spring of 1999 she returned to Broadway with Patrick Marber's hit Closer ( Hautnah ) .

From 1990 to 1992 she was married to producer Robert Fox . The marriage ended in divorce. On July 3, 1994 she married the actor Liam Neeson , the marriage had two sons.

On March 16, 2009, Richardson suffered an epidural bleeding in a skiing accident in Mont Tremblant . Since she did not want to go to the hospital, she was taken to her hotel room. Because of her deteriorating condition, she was first transported to a local emergency clinic and then to a hospital in Montreal . After she was transferred to a New York hospital the following day, she succumbed to her injury on March 18, 2009. Natasha Richardson was on the Saint Peter's Episcopal Cemetery in Lithgow near Millbrook in New York buried.
