Reviews

David Hunter wrote in the Hollywood Reporter on April 19, 2002 that the main topic of the film was the self-inflicted isolation of the artists shown. Ethan Hawke's directorial debut is "something special", but not a milestone in film history ( but less than industry-shaking ). Hunter criticized the lighting in some scenes and the use of the digital camera.

Mick LaSalle criticized the script in the San Francisco Chronicle , which was supposed to be "poetic" but seemed like a "satire". The action is "nonexistent"; the film shows a sequence of scenes with various characters in different rooms. LaSalle praised the "talented" actors.

On Rotten Tomatoes , the ratings of the listed reviews were summarized in a consensus that the film was "confusing" and more "pretentious" than "poetic".

Awards

Ethan Hawke was nominated for the Gotham Award in 2002.

background

Ethan Hawke said he made a short film about the Chelsea Hotel when he was 21. When he showed the film Nicole Burdette, the idea arose to film Burdette's play about the hotel. Hawke has cast numerous roles with friends such as Robert Sean Leonard and Steve Zahn, as well as his then-wife Uma Thurman (the couple divorced in 2004).

Filming took place in the original rooms at the Chelsea Hotel in New York City . The world premiere took place on September 21, 2001 at the Woodstock Film Festival ; later the film took part in a few other festivals. It has been shown in selected US cinemas since April 19, 2002, where it grossed around 60,000 US dollars .
