Uma Karuna Thurman [ ˈʔumə ˈθɝmən ] (born April 29, 1970 in Boston , Massachusetts ) is an American actress and former model . They are best known for their roles in Quentin Tarantino's films , especially in Pulp Fiction (1994) and Kill Bill (2003).

Career

Following the example of her mother, Thurman began her professional career as a photo model before she was discovered for the cinema. One of her first known roles was June Miller in Henry & June alongside Fred Ward . With nominations for an Oscar and a Golden Globe, the role of the self-destructive gangster bride Mia Wallace in Quentin Tarantino's cult film Pulp Fiction gave her her international breakthrough in 1994 . This was followed by less successful leading roles, such as in the future vision of Gattaca , in the comic book adaptation Batman & Robin (both 1997) and in a cinema version of the British television series Mit Schirm, Charme und Melone (1998) , which was considered unsuccessful by critics and audiences .

In 2003 she received a Golden Globe for her role in the television film Hysterical Blindness and she made a comeback as the avenging bride in Kill Bill - Volume 1 and Volume 2 as a co-author, again in collaboration with Tarantino . With the success of the two-parter, she again gained international attention and also received advertising contracts from the cosmetics company Lancôme and the luxury brand Louis Vuitton . Your fee in dollars per film climbed into the double-digit million range. In 2005 she was in the comedy Couch Whispering a woman in her late thirties who falls in love with a man who is almost fifteen years her junior and who turns out to be the son of her therapist (played by Meryl Streep ). In the comedy Die Super-Ex by director Ivan Reitman , she appeared as a superhero in 2006, who takes revenge on her ex-boyfriend for the passport she received. In 2007, Thurman appeared in the action short film Mission Zero, directed by Kathryn Bigelow for the Pirelli company . The 2010 film New York Mom with her in the lead role was a worldwide flop.

Thurman was made Knight of the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres in 2006. In 2011 she was a member of the competition jury at the 64th Cannes International Film Festival . Six years later she was selected as the jury president of the Un Certain Regard section at the 70th Cannes Film Festival .

Her Swedish maternal grandmother, Birgit Holmquist, was the model for the statue of a naked woman created by the sculptor Axel Ebbe and standing on the harbor promenade in Trelleborg since 1930 (title: Famntaget , "The Embrace"). Thurman's mother Birgitte Caroline "Nena" von Schlebrügge (born January 8, 1941 in Mexico City ) comes from her marriage to the German nobleman Friedrich Karl Johannes von Schlebrügge ; she was a psychotherapist and a well-known Swedish photo model in the 1960s. From 1964 to 1965 she was married to the American drug propagandist Timothy Leary , who pretended to be Thurman's godfather . In 1967 Nena von Schlebrügge married Robert Thurman , now a professor of Buddhist studies at Columbia University . He was the first American to be ordained a Buddhist monk by the Dalai Lama . "Uma" is the form of a goddess in Hinduism and means "The Merciful", "Karuna" there means "compassion". Uma Thurman has three brothers; a half-sister comes from Robert Thurman's first marriage. She is the aunt of the artist Dash Snow, who died in 2009, and the 2nd degree aunt of the Swedish football player Max von Schlebrügge .

Thurman was married to actor Gary Oldman from 1990 to 1992 . On May 1, 1998 she married the actor Ethan Hawke , with whom she has a daughter ( Maya Hawke , * 1998) and a son (* 2002). The marriage was divorced on July 20, 2004. In July 2012, Thurman and her partner Arpad Busson (* 1963) became parents of a daughter. The couple separated in spring 2014. Then there were rumors that she was dating her long-time friend and sponsor, director Quentin Tarantino , which she denied.

Commitment to environmental protection

Uma Thurman said that her children motivated her to do something for the environment. They know better about climate change than they do themselves. In 2015 Uma Thurman personally took part in a rescue operation in which several rhinos that are threatened with extinction were saved. She said she was doing this to raise awareness about rhinos and their protection. In 2019, Thurman acted as master of ceremonies at a benefit gala for the oceans. The gala was organized by Prince Albert II of Monaco . Thurman also supports the marine conservation organization Sea Shepherd .
