Schillerwein

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Schiller wine , also known as Schiller for short , is a wine that is made from a mixture of white and red grapes that have been harvested in a mixed batch , i.e. from the same plot (vineyard) and blended before the mash . Schillerwein, a Rotling , is mainly produced in Württemberg, but also in Saxony ( large location Lößnitz , here called Schieler ), Graubünden , in the St. Gallen Rhine Valley and in the canton of Valais . The wine was not named after the poet Friedrich von Schiller , but since the 16th century after its iridescent color.

All grape varieties grown in the Württemberg growing area may be used, which is why Schillerwein is very variable. In Graubünden, the proportion of red grapes must outweigh the white ones. In Valais, on the other hand, 85% Fendant are vinified with 15% Pinot Noir for Schiller.

A Rotling must have at least the quality level QbA (quality wine from certain growing areas) in order to be allowed to be marketed as a Schiller wine .
