action

The writer Anaïs Nin presents the manuscript of her new novel to her publisher. The publisher asks her where she got her extensive knowledge of affairs and sexuality. Nin replies first that she gets it from literature . Then she talks about her key experience from the 1930s.

In 1931, Nin, who grew up in the USA, lives in Paris. There she accompanies her husband Hugo, who works for a bank. Hugo introduces her to the writer Henry Miller , who hadn't published anything before. Nin meets Miller's wife June a little later. Both couples spend their free time together.

Nin is first fascinated by Henry, then she falls in love with June, who does not hide her bisexuality. While having sex with Hugo, she asks her husband to imagine he was having sex with June.

During a party, a publisher offers to publish Miller's novel Tropic of Cancer , but part of the production costs have to be advanced. The drunk June negotiates with him. Nin agrees to pay the costs. Later, when the two of them are together, June and Nin make love.

In the end, Anaïs wants to leave the couple, June reacts angrily. She throws the manuscripts of the novels by Miller and Nin into the air, the pages mingle. Hugo picks up Anaïs in his car, Henry rides a little behind on his bike.

Reviews

John Esther wrote in Pasadena Weekly that the film was a great shame. Desson Howe wrote in the Washington Post that Fred Ward and Maria de Medeiros worked well together, but Uma Thurman was not up to the challenge.

“The film describes the penetration of reality and fantasy in a cosmos closed off from the outside world, in which the protagonists strive for self-determination, sexual liberation and freedom of movement in order to achieve literary creativity. With the exception of a few formal approaches, he succumbs to his craftsmanship and tasteful style and flirts in a disproportionate manner with erotic 'little scandals'. "

Awards

Philippe Rousselot was nominated for an Oscar in 1991 for camera work .
