Quills - power of obsession is an American film director Philip Kaufman from the year 2000 . The production is based on the play of the same name by Doug Wright , who also wrote the script. The film depicts the final years of the Marquis de Sade's life in the Charenton Psychiatric Clinic in Charenton-Saint-Maurice (today Saint-Maurice, Val-de-Marne department ). Geoffrey Rush plays the leading role of the Marquis, Joaquin Phoenix the Abbé de Coulmier , Michael Caine the Dr. Royer-Collard and Kate Winslet the maid Madeleine LeClerc.

The production was nominated for Oscars in the categories of Best Actor ( Geoffrey Rush ), Best Production Design and Best Costume Design . In 2000 won Quills award of the National Board of Review as Best Film of the Year .

Although the film is based on true events, it does not claim to be historical accuracy, which also led to criticism of inaccuracies in the life and work of de Sade.

action

The film begins with one of the stories of the Marquis de Sade. This is about a lady who is on the way to the scaffold and develops a masochistic pleasure. The Marquis ponders this, writes down his thoughts and invites his readers to prepare for stories that “will stimulate your senses”.

Four years later, de Sade was incarcerated in the Charenton Mental Hospital . The maid Madeleine LeClerc ( Kate Winslet ) is his secret accomplice and smuggles his manuscripts hidden under dirty laundry from the institution. Soon after, his story Justine was published anonymously. The book is sensational and becomes an illegal bestseller on the streets of Paris. Napoleon therefore orders the public cremation of all copies of the book and the execution of its author. Napoleon's advisors convince him, however, that Dr. Sending Royer-Collard to Charenton to cure the Marquis of his perversions and to prevent the publication of further titles.

The abbot in charge of the clinic is completely surprised to learn that the Marquis was able to publish this text. He had allowed de Sade to write as a form of therapy and did not expect the resulting writings to reach the public. He refuses de Sade any more ink and paper to keep him from writing. In the meantime, Royer-Collard went through a brief, unfulfilled marriage with a much younger woman who eventually left him and left him with her suicide note in an edition of Justine . Royer-Collard sees de Sade's book as the main reason for his misfortune.

Royer-Collard forces the abbot to put de Sade in chains. As the film progresses, a power struggle develops between the two of them about how to deal with the Marquis correctly. De Sade gets caught between the fronts in this dispute. Royer-Collard is a strong advocate of traditional treatments for the "mentally ill," which include ice-water baths and cruel treatments. In contrast, the abbot relies on a peaceful environment, freedom and conversation in order to bring about the recovery of his patients. The abbot also offers theater performances and painting therapy. After the Marquis repeatedly and willfully undermines the efforts of the clergyman, the clergyman is finally forced to use Royer-Collard's methods after the nobleman has mocked him with a crude spectacle in the presence of dignitaries.

In the further course the abbot discovers that de Sade continues to write despite all prohibitions and measures. In the further course, the dispute between both sides about the use of the writing material, from chicken bones and wine to blood and scraps of clothing as writing material of the Marquis, which the abbot confiscates. Angry and helpless, de Sade ends up naked in a similar cell.

Further attempts by the Marquis to pass on the stories to Madeleine through other prisoners are ended by a prisoner rebellion and the death of the young maid. The body is discovered by her blind mother, who also works in the institution. Both the abbot and de Sade are dismayed by the murder. Out of pure anger, the nobleman pretends to the clergyman that he has had sex with the maid in various ways in the most varied of constellations. The abbot's answer that she was still a virgin when she died plunges him into even deeper grief. Pressed by the doctor, the abbot finally has de Sade's tongue cut out.

During the anointing of the sick, the abbot offers the nobleman the opportunity to kiss his rosary , but de Sade swallows the cross and suffocates on it. His death causes the abbot's total mental breakdown, and the former head of the institution then also becomes a patient. In his cell, Madeleine's blind mother now becomes his accomplice and he is now the one who thirsts to put his thoughts on paper.
