Billie Whitelaw

Billie Honor Whitelaw , CBE (born June 6, 1932 in Coventry , England , † December 21, 2014 in London ) was a British actress .

Life

Whitelaw grew up in Thornton and attended Grammar School in Bradford . She then studied acting at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art and made her theater debut in 1950. After her first roles on British television in 1952, she made her feature film debut in a minor supporting role the following year . In the following years she had constant engagements in film and television and was nominated for the first time for the British Film Award in 1961 . In 1969 she received the award twice, for Albert Finney's Charlie Bubbles - a successful dud from 1967 and for the horror film Teufelskreis Y from 1968. In the 1970s, she played in internationally successful productions such as Alfred Hitchcock's Frenzy and Das Omen . Most recently, she was in Hot Fuzz . Samuel Beckett , with whom she worked closely from 1963 until his death in 1989, called her his favorite actress. In 1991 she was appointed Commander of the British Empire.

Whitelaw was married twice. The first marriage to actor Peter Vaughan was divorced in 1966; her second husband, screenwriter Robert Muller , died in 1998. Whitelaw died in December 2014 at the age of 82 in a retirement home in Hampstead, London .
