Thornton is a village in the Metropolitan Borough City of Bradford in Metropolitan County West Yorkshire , England ( United Kingdom ) with a population of over 5000 (2011 Census). The village is located in the South Pennines on the western edge of the city of Bradford , which it was incorporated into in 1899, and has been part of the City of Bradford since the municipal reorganization of 1974 .
Thornton gained national fame as the birthplace of the four Brontë siblings in the 19th century. After her father, Patrick Brontë (1777–1861), accepted a position as pastor in Thornton in 1815, the young family lived in the village for five years until they moved to Haworth in April 1820 .
