Bradford is a metropolitan borough with the status of a city in the metropolitan county of West Yorkshire in England . The administrative seat is the city of the same name Bradford , in which almost two thirds of the population live. Other significant places in the borough are Addingham , Baildon , Bingley , Burley in Wharfedale , Denholme , Haworth , Ilkley , Keighley , Menston , Oxenhope , Saltaire , Shipley , Silsden and Thornton .

The reorganization of the borders and the competencies of the local authorities resulted in the formation of the Metropolitan Borough in 1974. The County Borough Bradford, Borough Keighley, the Urban Districts Baildon, Bingley, Denholme, Ilkley, Shipley and Silsden, part of the Urban District Queensbury and Shelf and individual villages of the Rural District Skipton were merged.

In 1986 Bradford became a de facto unitary authority when the central government dissolved the superordinate administration of West Yorkshire. Bradford remained part of West Yorkshire for ceremonial purposes , as well as for individual higher-level functions such as police, fire services and public transport.
