Breitenwisch ( Low German Bredenwisch ) is a district in the Lower Saxony municipality of Himmelpforten in the Stade district .

geography

Burgbeck Canal

Breitenwisch is - in contrast to the main town Himmelpforten - a scattered settlement in the marshland to the right of the Oste . The local area extends from the Geestrand Himmelpfortens in a northerly direction along the state road 113 to the municipality boundary of Engelschoff - Neuland . Its borders are in the north the Burgbeck Canal , in the east the Seemoor in Himmelpforten, in the south the district Löhe on the Geestrand in Himmelpforten, in the southwest the Horsterbeck and in the northwest the Oste.

history

Like its neighboring communities Engelschoff -Neuland and Großenwörden, Breitenwisch was probably settled by Dutch colonists in the 12th and early 13th centuries , who reclaimed the fertile marshes of the Archdiocese of Bremen , which were threatened by storm surges . This so-called Holler colonization was promoted by the Archbishops of Hamburg and Bremen as well as by Heinrich the Lion and established settlements in the entire Elbe-Weser triangle. The characteristic features of this period are marshland settlements with a linear arrangement of the farms. Ditches extend perpendicular to the river dike, forming an artificial drainage system and at the same time dividing the land into the typical bed structure, the so-called marsh hooves. The plots stretch about one to two kilometers. Usually the “Grootdör” of the farmhouse faces the Ostedeich.

The place name Breitenwisch possibly goes back to the fact that the marching hooves separated by the trenches, which are generally called “piece” here, are a little wider than elsewhere. The meadows laid out on it are called “Wischen” in Low German, a designation that z. B. also found in the place names Wisch, Wischhafen and in Kleinenwisch.

Religions

The place is predominantly evangelical and belongs to the parish of St. Peter in Horst / Burweg . The (few) Catholics belong to the St. Ansgar community in Hemmoor, approx. 15 km away .

Incorporation

In the course of the territorial reform on July 1, 1972, the previously independent village of Breitenwisch was assigned to the municipality of Himmelpforten in the integrated municipality of Himmelpforten.

Population development

After the regional reform, Breitenwisch was rededicated to the so-called "outdoor area", in which almost no new building activity was permitted. As a result, the population development was temporarily down. It was not until the years after German reunification in 1989, when there was an increased need for apartments and the like. a. appeared for emigrants, the creation of new living space was again made possible in Breitenwisch. In the meantime, the municipality of Himmelpforten has released a small part of the village of Breitenwisch for development with single-family houses, so that citizens who grew up here in particular have the opportunity to settle in their home town. Now young families with children are living in Breitenwisch again.

Culture and sights

St. Petri on the Horst

Romanesque stone church of Burweg - Horst , from the time of colonization of the region. The church of St. Petri on the Horst belongs administratively to the municipality of Burweg , but historically and in terms of location it is closely connected to Breitenwisch and is viewed by the residents as "their" church. It is surrounded by a small churchyard with very old tombstones.

The Ostedeich and the bed structure of the marshland are important cultural monuments that still bear witness to the hardship of the early residents.

The so-called Totenweg (corridor 5 at 48/003) still leads from Breitenwisch to Horst . In earlier times the dead from Neuland, Breitenwisch and Engelschoff were brought onto wooden wagons in the Horster sailors' church.

Horster Beek is located on the edge of the Breitenwisch district. A small river course (tributary of the Oste) to Himmelpforten, which is a popular place for fishermen and locals to relax due to its abundance of fish and its natural course. The dykes are under monument protection.

There are only a few typical old building structures left. In recent years, however, some courtyards / buildings have been restored and made usable again for today's residential purposes.

Club life / customs

Some customs have survived to this day: New Year's Knocking - On New Year's, people go from house to house and “knock” on the door to bring New Year's greetings to the residents. The guests are of course catered for accordingly. Then it's on to the next house.

Weddings - Public invitations are held at weddings and special wedding days. Instead of other presents, the guests bring the cheering couple an envelope with at least enough to finance the lavish wedding celebration. Therefore, weddings with 150 to 200 people are not uncommon.

Wedding anniversaries - Unless there is a “big” celebration in the hall, the neighbors tie a wreath (a garland), which is draped around the house wall with a lot of hello. The wedding days have the following names: cardboard or rubber wedding (5 years); Wooden Wedding (10 Years); Rose wedding (15 years); Glass (bottle) wedding (20 years); Silver Wedding (25 Years); Pearl wedding (30 years). Of course, the wreath is decorated according to the occasion. The honored couple must reward the wreath makers with food and beverages.

The club life is largely contested by the volunteer fire brigade Breitenwisch and the Breitenwischer sports club from 1970.

A traditional village meeting takes place every year as part of the large Easter fire, which burns annually on Easter Sunday.
