Location of the district of Stade in Lower Saxony | |
The district of Stade is a district in the north of Lower Saxony . It belongs to the Hamburg metropolitan region .
geography
location
The north-eastern border of the district is marked by the Elbe. In addition to the well-known Altes Land, the Kehdingen region and the Stader Geest belong to the Stade district . Several smaller rivers run through the district, such as the Schwinge , the Este and the Lühe .
Neighboring areas
The county borders in the clockwise direction in the north beginning at the other side of the same lying circles Dithmar , Steinburg and Pinneberg (all in Schleswig-Holstein ), to the city of Hamburg and to the counties Harburg , Rotenburg (Wümme) and substantially the course of the Oste following Cuxhaven (all in Lower Saxony).
Historical and institutional catchment areas
In terms of historical development, the district of Stade belongs to the former territory of Bremen-Verden , which extended over the Elbe-Weser triangle . In addition to the Stade district , this includes the current districts of Cuxhaven , Osterholz , Rotenburg (Wümme) and Verden . Many catchment areas of ecclesiastical, cultural, societal or social institutions such as the Chamber of Commerce, Protestant church district , landscape association and others are still based on the borders of this historical area. The territory of Bremen-Verden later formed a continuity with the Landdrostei Stade and the administrative district of Stade . The latter disappeared in 1978 in the enlarged administrative district of Lüneburg, which had also no longer existed in 2004 .
history
1885 to 1932
The first district of Stade was formed in 1885 in the Stade administrative district of the Prussian province of Hanover .
1932 until today
During the Prussian district reform of October 1, 1932, a new district of Stade was formed through the merger of the old district of Stade with the district of Kehdingen and the western part of the district of Jork . The communities of Großenwörden , Hüll and Neuland from the dissolved Neuhaus an der Oste district were also added to the new district .
As part of the Greater Hamburg Act , the Stade district ceded the Cranz community to Hamburg on April 1, 1937 .
The regional reform in Lower Saxony in 1972 brought a comprehensive reorganization as well as an area increase in the southeast of the district:
- The communities of Hove and Moorende from the Harburg district were incorporated into the community of Jork .
- The municipalities of Daensen , Eilendorf , Immenbeck , Ketzendorf and Ovelgönne from the Harburg district were incorporated into the city of Buxtehude .
- Through numerous parish mergers, the number of parishes in the district was significantly reduced.
On January 1, 2014 the combined communities of Oldendorf and Himmelpforten merged to form the new combined community of Oldendorf-Himmelpforten .

Religions
Traditionally, the area of today's Stade district is evangelical-Lutheran . The parishes belong to the regional church of Hanover . Especially after the war, large Catholic parishes have formed, which belong to the diocese of Hildesheim , due to the influx of many expellees, guest workers from southern Europe and repatriates from east-central and eastern Europe . Both large Christian churches are subject to restructuring processes as a result of leaving the church. There are also Muslims , members of free churches and Jehovah's Witnesses living in the district area .

coat of arms
Blazon : "Divided, split above: in front a black tower in gold, behind in blue a silver key, below in red a silver jumping horse."
The three symbols are intended to represent three important periods in Stade's history. The tower represents the time of the Counts of Stade in the 10th to 12th centuries. The key corresponds to the Bremen key and symbolizes the time under the Archdiocese of Bremen . It is also the coat of arms of the capital, the Hanseatic city of Stade. The Sachsenross stands for the Hanoverian and Lower Saxony period.
Economy and Infrastructure
economy
The rural population lives largely from agriculture , especially from fruit growing (fertile soils and the resulting harvests) or they commute to nearby Hamburg. The number of haulage companies in the district is above average.
Companies such as DuPont de Nemours , AOS , Airbus and E.ON also employ a large proportion of the residents. The old country in particular relies heavily on tourism and is very successful in doing so. There are a large number of restaurants and hotels there.
According to the news magazine Focus , the district is the economically strongest in all of Lower Saxony and thus even superior to Wolfsburg with Volkswagen , Salzgitter with Salzgitter AG (steel) or the Emsland district with the Meyer Werft located there . In a nationwide comparison, the district ranks 22nd in terms of its economic situation and thus improves by three places compared to the previous year . It is well connected to the entire European internal market by road, rail and the Elbe fairway.
In the 2016 Future Atlas , the Stade district was ranked 155th out of 402 districts, municipal associations and urban districts in Germany, making it one of the regions with a “balanced risk-opportunity mix”.
traffic
The district is relatively well connected to the city of Hamburg by the B 3 and B 73 . With the construction of the A 26 , a direct connection to the A 7 in Hamburg-Moorburg should be realized. It currently ranges from Stade to Buxtehude . The section of the A 20 near Stade, which is currently being planned, is intended to create a further possibility of crossing the Elbe . So far (as of 2015) it is the case that between Cuxhaven and Hamburg there is only the possibility of crossing the Elbe by car with an Elbe ferry at Wischhafen . At some point the A 22 should split off from the A 20 and lead to the Weser Tunnel .
The district of Stade has various train stations, most of which are located on the Niederelbebahn Hamburg – Cuxhaven. Another part is on the Bremerhaven – Buxtehude (KBS 122) line operated by EVB . The “ Moorexpress ” also runs here on summer weekends on the Stade - Bremervörde route, which has not been used for regular passenger traffic since 1993. Since December 12, 2004, the entire district has been part of the Hamburger Verkehrsverbund (HVV). Until then, the HVV tariff was only in effect in the municipality of Jork (since October 1, 1967). The railway line Stade - Hamburg-Neugraben was connected to the Hamburg S-Bahn with the timetable change at Deutsche Bahn on December 9, 2007 . Since then, the Cuxhaven - Hamburg Hbf ( Niederelbebahn ) line has also been served by the private metronom railway company with modern double-decker cars.
The fast ferry from Stadersand (not far from the city of Stade ) to Hamburg ceased its service in spring 2008 without replacement. The Stade district is criss-crossed by many cycle paths, including the Elbe cycle path .
For the industry in Stade and the industry stands Station Brunshausen in the town district Brunshausen of Stade available, mainly from the Dow Chemical as well as the two major transport companies Bertschi and Alfred Talke is used. In the near future, in addition to the existing general cargo port, a container port near Bützfleth is planned . be built, with which the settled industries can achieve an even better connection to the sales markets .
After the closure of the Stader nuclear power plant , the construction of a coal power plant is under discussion, which would be connected with the expansion of the general cargo port.
Up to October 2008 there was no drivable completed motorway in the district. Since then, the first section of the federal motorway 26 between Stade and Jork has been available.
On May 28, 1984 an F-104 Starfighter of the German armed forces crashed into a residential building between Stadermoor and Groß Sterneberg . From the house that caught fire, a woman was recovered dead and four other people seriously injured, two of whom died shortly afterwards. The pilot was able to save himself with the ejector seat.
education
The general education schools in the district include 41 primary schools , eight secondary schools (three with a "gymnasial offer"), two primary and secondary schools, two secondary schools , two secondary schools , five grammar schools , two free Waldorf schools , one other free school , four special schools and a cooperative Comprehensive school and two integrated comprehensive schools . There is one vocational school in Buxtehude and three in Stade .
Culture
The Landschaftsverband Stade was founded as a registered association to maintain cultural institutions .
The German Fährstrasse, an approximately 250-kilometer holiday route that opened in May 2004, runs through the district and connects around 50 ferries, bridges and other maritime attractions between Kiel and Bremervörde , including the Elbe ferries in Wischhafen and the eastern barrier in the municipality of Nordkehdingen and two prism ferries in Brobergen and Graepel in the joint municipality of Oldendorf-Himmelpforten .

License Plate
On July 1, 1956, the district was assigned the distinctive sign SD when the vehicle registration number that is still valid today was introduced . Due to the abbreviation SD for the security service of the Reichsführer SS , the district did not agree with this stipulation and issued license plates with the unauthorized abbreviation ST . As a new distinguishing mark , STD was established with effect from August 1, 1956. This is still issued today.
