history

prehistory

There were human settlements here on the Geestrand early on, as evidenced by the barrows on the Franzosenbarg and other barrows in the area.

Emergence

Brobergen was first mentioned in 1286 as Brocberge . The place name originated from a Low German field name that denotes the mountains in the Brook , i.e. in the Bruch , whereby mountains in the flat country are to be understood more as flat hills. This field name is already a lot older than the place it is today and originally referred to the entire section along the Oste from Gräpel to Burweg .

In 1141 a document from Stade Count Rudolf mentions that the three brothers Dudo, Adiko and Ricbert founded the Marienkloster in Stade and then received one of the three Brobergen as a fief . At that time the whole area was meant, but as early as 1286 one of their descendants is called Otto de Brocberge , who had his seat on a castle , the borch to brogberghen , which was probably built around 1270 . In the area of the castle there had already been another castle, the Müggenburg, of which no reliable information is available today other than its existence. At that time there were some dwellings in the vicinity of the castle, which can now be called Brobergen for the first time .

Another story

In 1364 it is first mentioned that there was a chapel in Brobergen. In 1525 it is mentioned in a court file that a Roland is said to have existed in Brobergen for some time : There was a carved image on the dam for a few years, called Rolandt, which people can still remember .

The noble family von Brobergen resided on the Hollander Höfe estate until there was no successor in 1618, so that the succession collapsed and the estate was sold.

Up until the Thirty Years' War there was a drawbridge over the Oste near Brobergen. It is said to have been burned down by Tilly troops around 1628 to prevent an attack by the Danes. Shortly afterwards, for the first time, a boat ferry was operated to reach the field marks on the other side of the Oste.

In the following time, ownership of the place passed through several hands, mostly merchants from Hamburg , until it was ransomed and divided up by the local farmers in 1837.

In the 19th and early 20th centuries there were numerous brickworks on the Oste that burned bricks from the Kleiboden on the Oste. In particular, the great Hamburg fire in 1842 allowed these brickworks to flourish for a long time.

During the Second World War, English bombers dropped incendiary bombs over Brobergen in autumn 1944, which could not be placed in Hamburg, causing three houses to go up in flames.

The “Hollander Höfe” manor near the ferry station existed until 1941, but was then torn down because it was in disrepair. In 1956 the "Fährkrug" was built on the same spot, which is the restaurant and residence of the ferryman.

religion

Brobergen is evangelical-Lutheran and belongs to the parish of Oldendorf. There is a separate cemetery at the entrance to Oldendorf, which also includes a cemetery chapel that is occasionally used for regular church services.

1 July 1972 Brobergen was in the course of municipal reform incorporated into the neighboring municipality Kranenburg.

Brobergen coat of arms

The Broberger coat of arms is red at the front and silver at the back split by a tin cut (for heraldry terms, see heraldry ). The municipality of Brobergen led it from March 31, 1948 in succession to the former noble family von Brobergen. After the incorporation to Kranenburg, the Broberg coat of arms has also appeared in the front of the municipal coat of arms since 1983.

Street names

The street names for the individual streets were only determined with the municipal reform, before the houses of the entire town were numbered consecutively.

Berg : The mountain is a separate district of Brobergen, which is slightly elevated about 500 m away from the main part of Brobergen.

Boben in Dbod : Boben in Dbod is a Low German expression for up (towards the east) in the village .

Fährstraße : The Fährstraße is one of the two ways that lead to the ferry.

Gräpeler Strasse / Kranenburger Strasse : These two streets are the result of the former Ostestrasse, which previously ran through several communities along the Oste, but was renamed the Kranenburg community.

Hüttenberg : The Hüttenberg is closest to the Oste and originally consisted of very simple cottages and huts.

Short street : The name of this connecting street between Boben in Dämp and Schulstraße with just one house is self-explanatory.

Neern in Dbod : Neern in Dbod is a Low German expression for down (eastwards) in the village .

Ostestrasse : → Gräpeler Strasse / Kranenburger Strasse

Culture and sights

tourism

In Brobergen the Ostefähre Brobergen runs over the Oste, which is part of the German Ferry Route . The “Fährkrug” restaurant is located at the ferry station. The restaurant and ferry are particularly popular with bike tourists on tours along the Oste.

Association

fire Department

According to a resolution of the municipal council of September 29, 1901, the volunteer fire brigade was founded on January 31, 1902 with 24 founding members. Approved by the district administrator on March 13, the fire brigade was equipped with uniforms in April. In May, a horse-drawn 300-liter vehicle sprayer from the Louis Tidow company from Hanover was bought and a fire station with an extinguishing water pond was soon built on the same property at the corner of Boben in Dämp / Short Street on which the current fire station is located. Unsolicited fire aid was to be provided in Kranenburg, Oldendorf, Estorf, Graepel, Blumenthal, Kuhla, Bossel and Behrste. Upon request, also in Burweg and in the places Laumühlen, Nindorf, Ihlbeck and Klint on the other side of the Oste. During the Second World War, women were also called in for fire service due to a lack of emergency services. In 1946 a portable pump (TS 8) from the Austrian company Rosenbauer was purchased and supplemented in 1948 by a vehicle from the Ford company . In 1948 the siren was also installed in the village forge, which is now remote-controlled from the fire control center in Wiepenkathen . In 1957 the fire engine was replaced by a VW model. In 1960, due to the now cramped conditions in the old fire station, construction began on a new multi-purpose building which, in addition to fire rooms, included a community room and a cold room and which today also houses the youth room. At the inauguration on April 30, 1960, 25 fire engines and over 350 firefighters from the three surrounding districts as well as numerous residents of the village were present. In 1972 the emergency vehicle was destroyed in an accident. However, a new TSF portable pump vehicle was quickly acquired. A standard was also purchased for the seventy-fifth anniversary.

Shooting club

The shooting club was founded in March 1935 with 45 members from the warrior club and a shooting range was set up. Due to the Second World War, the club's life was suspended from 1943 to 1951. Then the club was re-established with 56 members. On July 20, 1974, a women's section of the shooting club with initially 21 members was founded. The shooting club, with over 200 members and numerous events throughout the year, such as the two-day shooting festival on the third weekend in July, is one of the most important pillars of community life in the village. A pageant through the village is organized on both days, with the shooting majesties (queen and child queen) of the previous year being picked up from home on Saturday and the new shooting majesties (king and child king) on Sunday with the participation of foreign rifle delegations.

Ferry and History Association

Brobergen ferry

The "Fähr- und Geschichtsverein Brobergen und Umgebung e. V. ”was founded in 2007 to protect the ferry station from a planned dike. In 2008 the association took over the ferry and the associated restaurant "Fährkrug" as a tenant from the previous owner, an association of farmers. In the Middle Ages, the ferry station was the seat of a noble knight dynasty and so remains of the medieval castle can still be found in the ground, which the association had archaeologically examined. The finds made the great importance of this facility aware and so, after discussions with the responsible planning authorities, a complete dike was prevented.

The aim of the Fähr- und Geschichtsverein Brobergen and the surrounding area is the preservation and promotion of the ferry system in the integrated community of Oldendorf, in particular the maritime monument Fährstelle Brobergen with the historic and listed ferry fram. But the close cooperation with the ferry station in Graepel is also part of the work. The association's task is to strengthen both locations. In addition, the association would like to further research the former importance of the historic Brobergen ferry station and document it for the public. The castle "derer zu Brobergen", the largest castle of the Tide-Oste, with a castle tower, chapel, drawbridge and Roland statue once stood here in the Middle Ages. A replica of Roland was erected on September 16, 2007.

The current membership is 181 people. (As of December 31, 2013)

Warrior club

The war club was founded on January 30, 1898 by nine war veterans. The main purpose of the association was to provide help and consolation for the bereaved. In 1906 a flag was purchased for the association for 275 marks and inaugurated with a flag festival and procession. The 25th anniversary of the flag was still celebrated in a festive manner, but after that the club life largely ceased. The association was not re-founded until February 24, 1957. While a sworn soldier's oath was initially a condition of admission, this was liberalized in 1972 to the extent that any man over the age of 18 could become a member. In September 1998 a big ceremony was celebrated for the 100th anniversary.

Sports club

The Brobergen sports club, which was first founded in the 1920s, is primarily characterized by longer rest periods. Club life was suspended for the first time during the Second World War. Active periods after the war up to 1950 and from 1966 were interrupted by longer periods of rest due to a lack of active numbers. In 1990 the general meeting rejected a dissolution due to inactivity, but the association has been suspended since then. Brobergen's players in the dominant football today play primarily in FC Eintracht Oste, which also includes the towns of Kranenburg, Graepel and Estorf.

regional customs

Customs include wishing the New Year, when the children go from house to house to wish a happy New Year and receive sweets as thanks, while the adults eat grog and the like on their tour . Then the Easter fire , which is lit on Easter Sunday, and finally the maypole planting at Pentecost , during which the young men set up freshly felled birch trees on the night of Pentecost Sunday in front of the houses of the unmarried women and with a few other selected people the day before.

The Broberger costume is very similar to the costumes of most other places in the area.

There were different forms of costume for everyday life, for Sundays, for higher holidays as well as a mourning or half-mourning variant.

The costume of men is very simple in contrast to that of women. They wore blue-striped flannel shirts and trousers, and in summer they wore airy trousers made of undyed linen. The Sunday version consisted of a longer jacket and trousers made of dark fabric, a white linen shirt underneath the jacket and a dark, high-necked jacket, the buttons of which were covered with dark fabric.

The hoods or caps were held in place with ribbons tied under the chin. However, they were only worn after confirmation .

The everyday costume consisted of a gray jacket with three-quarter-length sleeves, a simple skirt and a striped apron.

The Sunday costume was worn for services and visits. A black satin apron was worn with her, behind which there was usually a fabric wallet tied with a ribbon around the waist. The cap level was a silver litze decorated.

The mourning costume has a black braid on the top of the cap. The half mourning costume was worn after the end of the one-year mourning period in the transition to normal clothing.

The costume was ubiquitous until the beginning of the 20th century. After that, its use quickly decreased, so that it was only worn sporadically in the 1950s. Today it is no longer worn.

War memorial

The war memorial

At the end of the village in the direction of Oldendorf near the cemetery is the war memorial dedicated to the seven fallen of the First World War ; it was built in 1921 on the initiative of the war club. The solemn sermon by Pastor Hittmeyer from Oldendorf was also attended by Lieutenant Colonel von Lahnstein from Stade. After the Second World War , the names of the 17 who died in the last war were also immortalized on the memorial.

A renewed memorial was inaugurated after the Second World War on September 28, 1952 with a sermon from Pastor Bergens.

Village community center

The Broberg village community center with a usable area of 255 m² was built between September 1988 and June 1989 at the shooting range of the rifle club behind the old restaurant.

Economy and Infrastructure

traffic

Prahmfähre over the Oste in Brobergen

Brobergen is connected to Gräpel and Kranenburg via the K 82. This offers a connection to the B 73 at Burweg and to the B 74 at Elm , which continues to Bremervörde . The K 78 goes to Oldendorf, which continues to Himmelpforten and, with the connection there to the B 73, forms the most important traffic connection to Stade and Hamburg .

Due to the natural barrier that the Oste forms and which can only be overcome with difficulty by the ferry or not at all during the winter, the traffic contact with the areas west of the Oste runs primarily via the bridges at Hechthausen and Bremervörde.

The commuter traffic to Hamburg runs partly on the Niederelbebahn at the train station in Himmelpforten.

education

Today there are no more educational institutions in Brobergen. The children of kindergarten age can visit the play group in Kranenburg. In addition, the children usually attend primary school in Estorf and finally secondary or secondary school in Oldendorf or the Vincent-Lübeck-Gymnasium in Stade or the Gymnasium Bremervörde .

An elementary school is documented from 1797 at the latest, but probably a lot older. In 1845, the year in which the Broberg school chronicle began, the school had 45 students. This number rose to 63 students by 1914. The school existed until December 1, 1966.

economy

Today there is hardly any economy in Brobergen. In addition to around half a dozen family-owned full-time farms, there are also a number of part-time farms, as well as a refrigeration technology company and an inn on the Höben. The only business run by the Plate family had to close in the 2000s for reasons of age and profitability.

There is also a wind farm with four wind turbines to the east of the village. For information on the political dispute it sparked, see the Congregational Article in the Politics section .

A small gallery has been located at Schulstrasse 6 since 2002. In addition to pictures by various artists, “Art & Decorative Scheefeld” offers decorative items and figures.

Personalities

Brobergen is the residence of the comic artist Dieter Kalenbach . The Aachen professor of medicine Volker Schumpelick maintains a second home in Brobergen. The multiple world champion in casting , Klaus Rieckmann, also lives in the village.
