Graepel ( Low German Gröpel ) is a district of the municipality of Estorf in the Stade district in Lower Saxony . The smaller settlement of Schönau also belongs to Graepel .

Geographical location

Graepel is located between Brobergen in the north and Behrste in the south on the right bank of the Oste on the German ferry route . To the east is the main town of Estorf 1 km away and to the west on the other bank of the Oste Ostendorf . Graepel reaches over to the other bank of the Oste with a small piece of land.

history

middle Ages

In a document from Count Friedrich von Stade from 1111 to 1116 about a gift from Archbishop Liemar , Graepel is first mentioned under the name Grupilinga .

Modern times

In May 1868, Roman silver coins were found about 60 cm below the earth while digging in the sand at a point where the Geest is under water in the Oste . Altogether there should have been 100-150 pieces, but they were all sold individually. Five pieces of it acquired the former magistrate from office Himmelspforten , Friedrich Christian Marschalck of Bachtenbrock , and presented it to the Historical Society of Lower Saxony . The coins came from the time of the emperors Vespasian , Trajan , Antonius and Faustina .

Stockbuschhafen and shipyards

With one of the largest Stackbusch ports in Europe, Graepel offered regionally based inland waterway operators a wintering place until well into the 1960s . The local boatmen's association cherishes the memory of the days when the ewer and barges still took over the supply of the region.

Graepel is located directly on the Oste, alongside Bremervörde it played an important role in this region as a port and especially as a shipyard location for around 200 years. In addition to two small new shipyards (Barthold Siems and Johann Steffens), Graepel had two small repair yards and around 1900 18 shipowners were based here. The ships built by Graepel shipyards were mainly delivered to the skippers in the vicinity as far as Hamburg and Cuxhaven , who mainly drove as owners. The smaller ships were mainly used in river shipping to Hamburg, Bremen or Bremervörde . At this time, peat shipping played a major role for the little sailors, especially in summer. The larger ships of these shipyards as well as those of tom Wörden were also used in coastal traffic to England.

Regional affiliation

Before 1885, Graepel belonged to the Börde Oldendorf in the office of Himmelpforten , after 1885 to the district of Stade, and since 1932 to the current district of Stade .

Incorporation

As early as 1910, Gräpel formed a community association with the Schönau homestead .

On July 1, 1972, the municipality of Graepel was incorporated into Estorf and incorporated into the joint municipality of Oldendorf-Himmelpforten .
