The United States Embassy in the United Kingdom is located in Nine Elms in south London. The newly built building complex was occupied in January 2018. The current US Ambassador to the UK is Woody Johnson .
history
In 1785, John Adams was the first official representative of the United States Congress in London. In the 1930s, embassy activities were concentrated in Grosvenor Square . With the outbreak of war in 1939, the embassy prepared for an evacuation. While the embassy still had 166 employees in 1939, due to the many visa processing in 1947, there were already 487.
The project for the new embassy building was planned in 2008 during the presidency of George W. Bush .
On January 16, 2018, the employees moved into the new embassy building. The incumbent US President Trump had announced that he would not come to the official opening of the building in February 2018. He justified his rejection with his dissatisfaction with the remote location of the embassy in south-west London. Trump also criticized the construction costs.

Embassy in Grosvenor Square
The US embassy was located in Grosvenor Square in London's affluent Mayfair district until 2018 . The building designed by Eero Saarinen was opened in 1960.
Message in Nine Elms from 2018
The new embassy building is located in Nine Elms in south London. The futuristic embassy building is strong, but almost invisible from the outside, secured. It was designed by the Philadelphia architectural firm Kieran Timberlake . A twelve-story glass cube forms the main building. This building is largely self-sufficient. In front of the building is a sculpture by the British-Japanese artist Simon Fujiwara entitled "Modern Marriage".
The new building cost around 820 million euros; the entire complex is said to have cost around one billion euros.
