Historical association for Lower Saxony

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Historical Association for Lower Saxony (eV) was founded in 1835 on the initiative of the Vaterländisches Archiv magazine, which was founded in 1819 . In addition to the issuing of publications, the association initiates numerous works that are continued on a broader and higher level by the Historical Commission for Lower Saxony and Bremen . The center of the club's life are public lectures and excursions about the country.

The prehistoric department of the Lower Saxony State Museum and the Lower Saxony monument preservation are derived from the association.

The seat of the association is located in the building of the Lower Saxony State Archives in Hanover in the Hanover district of Calenberger Neustadt .

history

After the association's board of directors was elected on April 20, 1835 (with Count Johann Friedrich von dercken as President), the statutes were adopted on May 19, 1835 and invited to join on June 20, 1835 - the 20th anniversary of the Battle of Waterloo , one dedicated oneself to the two goals of the association; to promote research into the country's history and to make its knowledge accessible to large parts of the population. At the end of 1835 the association already had 371 members.

In 1861 the association took part in the pageant for the inauguration of the Ernst August monument . The names of the participating club members are listed individually in the Ernst August album .

The protectorate over the association was initially held by Duke Adolph Friedrich von Cambridge until his death in 1850, then the last king of Hanover, Georg V (Hanover) , also until his death.

The association chairmen (until 1899: "President" or "Director") were initially only high officials and the military, with the exception of Carl Ludwig Grotefend , archives director who was in office from 1867–1874 . After the First World War, women were also accepted into the association for the first time. As a rule, the directors of the provincial library were initially appointed, and then, from 1927, those of the Hanover State Archives were chaired.

During the time of National Socialism , the "Association for the History of the City of Hanover" (founded on February 24, 1893) was incorporated in 1937, which further increased the numerical preponderance of the Hanoverian members.

The various collections of the association included, in addition to the museum material acquired by the Provincial Museum in 1903, archival material such as documents , original files or copies , maps such as the Ebstorf world map , plans and much more. These collections were destroyed by the air raids on Hanover on September 8, 1943.
