Manfred Hamann (archivist)

Manfred Hamann (born October 10, 1926 in Poischwitz , Jauer district , Lower Silesia province ; † December 15, 1991 in Langenhagen ) was a German historian and archivist , author and editor . Among other things, he was director of the main state archive in Hanover for around a decade .

Life

Born during the Weimar Republic in what was then Lower Silesia, Manfred Hamann graduated from high school in the middle of World War II in 1944. In the initial Soviet occupation zone , he studied history and English from 1946 to 1951 at the University of Rostock . He then worked for two years in the Rostock City Archives before receiving his doctorate in 1953 at the Humboldt University in Berlin on a topic of medieval city history.

In Potsdam , Hamann completed his training as a senior archive service from 1953 to 1955 at the Institute for Archive Studies there , which was subordinate to the Humboldt University in Berlin. In the same year he began to gain his first professional experience at the State Main Archive in Schwerin .

In 1958 Hamann fled to the Federal Republic .

On May 1, 1959, the state of Lower Saxony hired Hamann at what was then the State Archive of Hanover , where he rose around ten years later from 1969, initially to the position of permanent deputy to the archive director at the time, then to the chief archive director in 1972 and finally - as the successor to Carl Haase - to archive director in 1979 was appointed, an activity that Hamann exercised until June 30, 1989.

Parallel to his work in the (main) state archive, Hamann was elected a member of the Historical Commission for Lower Saxony and Bremen in 1962 and was its deputy chairman from 1970 to 1986. Hamann also chaired the Historical Association for Lower Saxony from 1965 to 1985 at almost the same time .
