Georg Heinrich Gerhard game

Georg Heinrich Gerhard Spiel (born May 30, 1786 in Nordheim ; † February 5, 1822 ) was a lawyer , civil servant , historian , author and editor .

In the magazine Vaterländisches Archiv he founded, Spiel referred to the publication of the unused documents in the archives . He gave the decisive initiative for founding the Historical Association for Lower Saxony, which is still active today .

family

Georg Heinrich Gerhard was the son of the (later) procurator Spiel († March 25, 1811 ) of the Higher Appeal Court in Celle . He married in 1815.

Professional career and illness

After attending the city school in Celle , he attended grammar school in Gotha for a year to study law at the University of Göttingen from 1805 .

Back in Celle in November 1807, Spiel settled down as trustee and two years later was elected as a senator to the city's magistrate . In 1810 he was transferred to Nienburg / Weser as procurator of the local court of first instance. After his father's death, Spiel returned to Celle to take up his vacant position as procurator of the Higher Appeal Court.

After the end of French rule and the formal repossession of the Electorate of Hanover by Duke Ernst August von Cumberland on November 4, 1813, Spiel resigned "to the old urban situation and at the same time became ... Procurator" (of the Celle law firm).

Shortly after his wedding in 1815, "a dangerous illness from which he recovered only slowly." Although Spiel was elected city secretary in Celle in 1820 , it was not until 1821 that "a trip to Norderney ... had given him full health again, but already on February 5th, 1822 he succumbed to his suffering.

In addition to his extensive professional business, Spiel devoted himself to historical studies. In 1818 he was initially one of the founders of a historical reading circle , and by 1819 the magazine himself

to establish and publish. The focus of the “archive” was on historical aspects. Spiel published a total of four volumes through Hahnsche Buchhandlung ; the first volume appeared in 1819, the fourth in 1821

After Spiel's death, the Celle Oberappellations-Rat Ernst Peter Johann Spangenberg continued to publish the “archive” under the new title

Spiel himself wrote some, "although not very extensive contributions to the 'archive' ... (which) relate to the history of the city of Celle and the principality of Lüneburg ."

In the essay How to arouse interest in a common fatherland? or what do we lack in order to receive and disseminate more precise information about our fatherland? "He emphasized the publication of the unused documents in the archives."
