Thomas Schwark (born February 29, 1956 in Lübeck ) is a German historian and director of the Museums for Cultural History Hanover.

Life

After studying history, German literature and education in Hamburg, Schwark received his doctorate in 1989 with a study on the social history of the Hanseatic city of Lübeck.

From 1986 to 1990 he was a research assistant in the Office for Monument Preservation of the Hanseatic City of Lübeck . From 1990 to 1994 he worked at the Weser Renaissance Museum Brake / Lemgo. From 1994 to 1998 Schwark was director of the Rostock Cultural History Museum and from 1998 director of the Historical Museum on the Hohen Ufer in Hanover.

Thomas Schwark has headed the Hanoverian Museum Association since 2014, consisting of the August Kestner Museum, the Historical Museum on the Hohen Ufer and the Herrenhausen Palace Museum .

Schwark is honorary professor at Leibniz Universität Hannover , member of the historical commission for Lower Saxony and Bremen , deputy chairman of the historical association for Lower Saxony and since 2017 an individual member of the Kulturpolitische Gesellschaft Bonn e. V.
