Künstlerhaus Hannover

The Künstlerhaus Hannover is a listed building in Hannover . It is located in the Mitte district near the opera house and is the seat of several cultural institutions.

The House

The heritage protection house was built, and from 1853 to 1856 on 23 February 1856 Museum of Art and Science in the presence of King George V inaugurated. The initiative to build it came from the Natural History Society of Hanover in the middle of the 19th century, together with the Historical Association of Lower Saxony (founded in 1835) and the Association for Public Art Collections (founded in 1848), which also brought in their collections. The architect Conrad Wilhelm Hase designed the building in the arched style of the Hanover School of Architecture . The reliefs and figures are by the sculptor Wilhelm Engelhard , the statues by Dürer, Vischer, Leibniz and Humboldt on the facade by Carl Dopmeyer . In the following years the museum was renamed the Museum of the Province of Hanover and then the Provincial Museum . The house with its extensive collections quickly suffered from a lack of space and since no structural extensions were possible in 1895, a new building was built in 1902 on the edge of the Maschpark . After the completion of the new museum (today's Hanover State Museum ), the old building at Sophienstrasse 2 became the property of the city and was redesigned to become the Künstlerhaus of the City of Hanover (also called Künstlerhaus Sophienstrasse in older pre-war catalogs ).
