The Hannoversche Künstlerverein ( HKV ) has existed since 1842. The club has its club room in the Künstlerhaus Hannover at Sophienstrasse 2.

Until the First World War , the association was the leading cultural association with high-ranking artists, personalities and (honorary) members. The “Architects and Engineers Association of Hanover” and the “Association for the Public Art Collection” (which is now part of the collections in the Lower Saxony State Museum ) were formed from among its ranks .

In recent times, the association has increasingly appeared through working groups in events on the subjects of literature and the visual arts .

history

founding

On October 11, 1842, 65 representatives from Hanover's cultural life met in the “de Strelitz” hotel in Calenberger Neustadt . According to the statutes, the 65 founders of the association wanted to offer artists and those interested in art opportunities for “noble sociability”.

Ernst von Bandel , Heinrich Ludwig August Hengst , Eduard Kasten, Georg and Hermann Kestner , Edmund Koken , Wilhelm Kretschmer , Heinrich Kümmel , Heinrich Marschner and Carl Oesterley attended the founding meeting .

The official founding date, however, was October 18, the day of St. Luke : this day was celebrated annually in the Kunstverein as the so-called " St. Luke's Festival".

Künstlerhaus Hannover

The Künstlerhaus before 1858, then the "Museum for Art and Science"

From 1855 the association met in the newly built “Museum for Art and Science” (today's “Künstlerhaus Hannover”). The bigger events included:

1933–1945 the association was spared "sanctions" by the National Socialists , as the chairmen Fritz Heiligenstaedt , Elbers and Köhler were close to the NSDAP .

After 1945

After the air raids on Hanover in World War II , the Künstlerhaus was not rebuilt until 1954. Since then, the association has had a “club room” for both administration and events. It wasn't until 1961, however, that the club room was inaugurated.

With the change in the art scene in Hanover through the Kunstverein Hanover , the Kestner Society and the construction of the Sprengel Museum , there was a decline in importance for the Hanover Art Association.

From the 1960s, under the chairmen Reimar Dahlgrün , Gotthard Kronstein , G. Katzenberger and Claus-Ulrich Heinke, increased initiatives in the field of music were undertaken. Outstanding was the concert series “Matinee im (Theater am) Aegi ”, organized from 1978 to 2000, which promoted the next generation of musicians in and beyond Hanover.

Third millennium

After 160 years of club history, a woman chaired the Hanover Art Association for the first time in 2002: Under Heidi Plank († 2008), the club room, unchanged since 1961, was redesigned by the architect Carola Woelk.

The association has recently made a name for itself through initiatives and events in the fields of literature and visual arts.

Brehmer evening

The goldsmith, medalist, royal Hanover coin engraver and sculptor Heinrich Brehmer left 6000 gold marks from his fortune to the Hanover Art Association . The association's “Brehmer Evening”, which is celebrated annually on the artist's birthday on November 25th with the so-called “damp cover”, goes back to this legacy.

Members

Regular members

Until 1973 women were not allowed as members, but welcomed as guests. From 2002, however, the association had a female chairman for the first time, Heidi Plank .
