The Wilhelm Busch - German Museum for Caricature and the Art of Drawing is located in Hanover . The museum is housed in the Georgenpalais , a palace built around 1780 in the Georgengarten . The museum is run by the Wilhelm Busch Society .

Foundation and description

The museum was founded in 1937, when the Wilhelm Busch Society, founded in 1930 , opened the first museum for the Lower Saxon artist Wilhelm Busch in the city center of Hanover .

The passionate collector Emil Conrad became one of the founders of the Wilhelm Busch Society and first director of the museum in 1937 .

But in the time of National Socialism Wilhelm Busch was interpreted from the perspective of the so-called "völkisch movement" : The temporary archivist of the Wilhelm Busch Museum, Karl Anlauf , published his work The Philosopher von Wiedensahl for members of the Gutenberg Book Guild around 1939 . The museum was destroyed in the air raids on Hanover in 1943. The art holdings had previously been outsourced. In 1950 the new beginning took place in the Georgenpalais with an extensive presentation of the works of Wilhelm Busch and the first caricature exhibition.

The museum is supported by the Wilhelm Busch Society. Today (2010) it has around 2500 members at home and abroad. The museum has been supported by the Association of Friends and Patrons since 2002. The city of Hanover, which provides the building with exhibition rooms in historical architecture free of charge, grants the museum an annual subsidy. Since the summer of 2000, after extensive renovation, the museum has been offering a voluntary café for visitors in connection with the newly designed palace garden.

The house regularly cooperates with the Linden-Nord- based book printing museum.

Duration

The museum has a unique Wilhelm Busch collection and an internationally significant collection of satirical art from four centuries with works by artists such as William Hogarth , James Gillray , Francisco de Goya and Honoré Daumier as well as Thomas Theodor Heine , A. Paul Weber , Tomi Ungerer , Jean-Jacques Sempé and Ronald Searle . Since around the year 2000 the collection has grown significantly, including a collection of over 700 sheets of Napoleon caricatures, works by the Austrian caricaturist Erich Sokol , the bequests of the draftsmen Volker Kriegel and Friedrich Karl Waechter, and the visual art work of the writer Günter Kunert .

Exhibitions

In the museum there are regular exhibitions, mostly every three months, with historical and contemporary caricatures and critical graphics, cartoons and comics. Many exhibitions are subsequently passed on to other museums, mainly in German-speaking countries, but also to various European countries.

The museum holds regular temporary exhibitions on caricature and critical graphics . Since 1950, important artists have been presented in comprehensive exhibitions in around 150 exhibitions. Works by William Hogarth , Honoré Daumier , Grandville , Winsor McCay , Carl Barks , Walt Disney , Hergé , Tomi Ungerer , Paul Flora , Ronald Searle , Manfred Deix , Gottfried Helnwein , Roland Topor , Wolf-Rüdiger Marunde and Friedrich Karl were shown Guard .
