Wolf-Rüdiger Marunde (born February 26, 1954 in Hamburg ) is a German draftsman, illustrator and cartoonist . Marunde is considered a representative of a particularly painterly cartoon genre.

Life

Growing up in Harksheide ( Norderstedt ) in Schleswig-Holstein , Marunde began studying visual communication at the Hamburg University of Applied Sciences in 1972 and graduated as a designer in 1976 . He then drew cartoons and illustrations for various magazines, first for Stern , then Brigitte , SZ-Magazin , Hörzu and others. His drawings also appeared in illustrated books, calendars and on postcards. In 1985 a fire destroyed his studio in the north of Schleswig-Holstein , along with practically all of the works that had been created up to that point. After provisional residence, he moved to the Lüchow-Dannenberg district in Lower Saxony in 1988 , where he still lives with his family.

Work and action

During her studies, Marunde attended the press illustration class of lecturer Marianne Weingärtner. He was particularly interested in French comics and cartoons, especially portrait caricaturists like Ricor or Mulatier and comic artists like Bilal or Moebius. His work, trained on these models, led to his first orders for the humor magazine MAD and the satirical magazine pardon while he was still a student .

After completing his thesis, however, he first had to do his community service. In 1980 he introduced himself to Erhard Kortmann, head of the Humor & Satire department of Stern magazine . He initially hired him, but after a year of working together, he recommended him to the Brigitte editorial team, who wanted to establish a full-page color cartoon and were looking for a suitable artist. There Marunde began working on large-format, painterly cartoons using the watercolor technique, a novelty in the German press landscape at the time. At the same time he worked for the cover editorial team of Stern as a portrait caricaturist and illustrator of political topics. In 1986 he developed the series “Marundes Landleben” for Brigitte , then “News from Schweinhausen”. Both series have in common the detailed description of the rural environment and farm equipment, the landscapes and lighting moods. This resulted in the (now out of print) cartoon volumes "Marundes Landleben" (87-90), "Neues aus Schweinhausen" (92) and "Schweinhausen privat" (94).

Together with Dietmar Wischmeyer , Marunde was the author of "Der Kleine Tierfreund" (91) and "Die Zurück" (92) from 1989 to 1994. "Der Kleine Tierfreund" is a satirical figure developed by Wischmeyer for radio and embodied as a speaker and actor.

He has been working as a permanent freelance cartoonist at Hörzu since 1995 . In 2010 he also took over a page in a new offshoot, Hörzu-Wissen . In 2011 a cartoon page was added to the “profi” magazine, a specialist magazine for agricultural technology. From 2015 he will concentrate on his work for Hörzu and as a freelance illustrator. In 2002 he won the German Caricature Prize and in 2015 the bronze pen at the 16th German Caricature Prize.

In 2003 he also worked with the Hamburg film studio TRIKK17 , which shot animated films in stop-motion technology based on motifs from Marunde cartoons for NDR television . In the last 20 years there have been more than 40 Marunde exhibitions, the draftsman likes to take his pictures to the provinces, to small art associations and regional museums. His largest solo exhibition to date took place in 2004/2005 at the Wilhelm Busch Museum in Hanover.
