German Caricature Award

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The German Caricature Prize is a supranational competition for German-speaking caricaturists and cartoonists that has been held annually since 2000 and is endowed with a total of 11,000 euros in prize money.

Structures

The competition is organized by the Sächsische Zeitung , which originally launched the event. In the years 2006 to 2008 this was done together with the Frankfurter Rundschau , before the latter withdrew again for economic reasons. Since 2016, the Bremen daily Weser-Kurier has supported the organization on an equal footing. The award ceremony will take place annually alternately in Dresden and Bremen. In 2015, 218 artists from Germany, Austria and Switzerland applied for the caricature award.

A jury selects five winners from the submissions under an annually changing motto. You will be awarded the “winged pencil” in gold, silver and bronze as well as best newcomer and audience favorite. The “winged pencil” in gold is endowed with 4,000 euros, the silver with 3,000, the bronze with 2,000 euros and the newcomer of the year receives 1,000 euros. During the exhibition, visitors can cast their vote for the audience award. This is also endowed with 1,000 euros.

The caricatures can be viewed in December and January in an exhibition in the publishing house of the Sächsische Zeitung in Dresden or at the Weser-Kurier in Bremen. For the 14th German Caricature Award (2013), a record attendance was set with 16,260 onlookers.
