Michael Holtschulte (born April 19, 1979 in Herne ) is a German cartoonist , caricaturist and illustrator . Holtschulte is best known for the cartoons in the series Tot, but Funny , which are often characterized by cynical, black humor.

Life

After graduating from high school in Herten and the subsequent community service , Holtschulte studied modern German literature , social psychology and political science at the Ruhr University in Bochum , where he graduated in 2006.

At the age of 15, Holtschulte's first commercial publications appeared in the Westdeutsche Allgemeine Zeitung (WAZ). In the following years, too, drawings appeared regularly in the various local editorial offices and in the weekend supplement to the publication. During his studies, Holtschulte also worked for various advertising agencies.

In 2007 Holtschulte started his own business as a cartoonist, caricaturist and illustrator. Cartoons from his pen have appeared in Bild am Sonntag (BamS), Westdeutsche Allgemeine Zeitung (WAZ), Financial Times Deutschland (FTD), Mac Life and other publications.

Today Holtschulte lives in Herten and records regularly for the national daily newspapers SZ and taz , the film magazine deadline , the video game magazine Return, the satirical magazine Titanic , the humor - and satire magazine Eulenspiegel , the Journal Star or comic magazine Yps .

Since 2015, Holtschulte has also been implementing his cartoons as a stage program, in a duo with Oliver Hilbring under the title "Zwei Stricher unpacken" or solo with the current program "The last comes to the end".

The project "Dead, but funny"

In 2004 Michael Holtschulte's first cartoon book was published by Toonster Verlag . Due to Holtschulte's penchant for black humor cartoons, in which the Grim Reaper often appears as the protagonist , Dead, but funny , soon emerged as the title-giving motto.

In early 2005 then went with totaberlustig.de the Cartoon Web page of the artist online. The website was technically and creatively created by Holtschulte himself and is still exclusively managed by him to this day. Since the online project was launched, Holtschulte has published a new cartoon there at least once a week. In 2010, the online service a was dead but-funny - Facebook page expanded, which is now more than 300,000 fans. At the beginning of 2015, Lappan Verlag published the book Tot, but Funny , on the tenth anniversary of the website , which went into its second edition just three weeks after publication. The follow-up volume was published in 2019, as well as regular calendars under the title.
