NGC 4817 is a 14.7 mag bright elliptical galaxy of the Hubble type "E / C" (the C stands for Compact ) in the Coma Berenices in the northern sky . It is an estimated 298 million light years away from the Milky Way and has a diameter of about 45,000 ly. The galaxy is a member of the Coma galaxy cluster Abell 1656 .
In the same area of the sky are u. a. the galaxies NGC 4816 , NGC 4828 , NGC 4840 , NGC 4850 .

The object was discovered by Guillaume Bigourdan on May 11, 1885 . Bigourdan gave the direct position incorrectly (and never corrected this error), but NGC 4817 can be found correctly in relation to the neighboring galaxies he observed.
