NGC 4797 = NGC 4798 is an elliptical galaxy of the Hubble type E / S0 with an active galaxy core in the constellation Haar der Berenike in the northern sky . It is an estimated 352 million light years from the Milky Way and about 100,000 light years in diameter.
In the same area of the sky are u. a. the galaxies NGC 4788 , NGC 4789 , NGC 4807 , IC 3900 .
The object was discovered twice; first on April 11, 1785 by Wilhelm Herschel with an 18.7-inch reflector telescope , who described it as “F, pS” (observation listed in the catalog as NGC 4798 ); then on April 21, 1865 by Heinrich Louis d'Arrest (and listed as NGC 4797 ).
