NGC 4786 is a 11.8 mag bright elliptical cD galaxy of the Hubble type E2 in the constellation Virgo on the ecliptic . It is an estimated 203 million light years away from the Milky Way and is about 100,000 light years in diameter .
In the same area of the sky are u. a. the galaxies NGC 4775 , NGC 4813 , IC 833 , IC 3908 .
The Type Ia supernova SN 2002cf was observed here.
The object was discovered on April 17, 1784 by Wilhelm Herschel with an 18.7-inch reflector telescope, who described it as “pF, pL, r”.
