NGC 4796 is a 14.5 mag bright elliptical galaxy of the Hubble type "E / C" (the C stands for Compact ) in the constellation of Virgo . It is an estimated 105 million light years away from the Milky Way and has a diameter of about 15,000 ly. It is gravitationally connected to NGC 4795 , the eastern arm of which is already showing signs of this influence.

The object was discovered on March 25, 1865 by Albert Marth , who first mistook it for a star .
