Catalog of Galaxies and of Clusters of Galaxies

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Catalog of Galaxies and of Clusters of Galaxies , also known as the Zwicky catalog , is a catalog of galaxies and galaxy clusters compiled by Fritz Zwicky and his colleagues . Both CGCG and ZWG are used as an abbreviation for the catalog and identifier for its objects .

The Zwicky catalog was created on the basis of photographic images of the sky. In total, there are around 30,000 galaxies and around 10,000 galaxy clusters. Between 1961 and 1968, Zwicky published a total of six volumes of the catalog at the California Institute of Technology . The aim was to capture all galaxies brighter than 15.5 magnitudes north of 30 ° south latitude as well as all member-rich bright galaxy clusters in this area. Positions and brightnesses are given for the galaxies. The galaxy clusters are classified as open, medium-compact, or compact. Membership numbers, position, extent and estimated distance are indicated.
