NGC 4816 is an elliptical galaxy of Hubble type E / S0 in the constellation Coma Berenices the northern sky . It is an estimated 310 million light years away from the Milky Way and has a diameter of about 120,000 ly. The galaxy is a member of the Coma galaxy cluster Abell 1656 .
In the same area of the sky are u. a. the galaxies NGC 4807 , NGC 4817 , NGC 4828 , NGC 4840 .
The object was discovered on April 11, 1785 by Wilhelm Herschel with an 18.7-inch reflector telescope, who described it as "F, pL".
