NGC 4823 is a 14.7 mag bright lenticular galaxy of the Hubble type S0 / a in the constellation Virgo on the ecliptic . It is estimated to be 201 million light years from the Milky Way and about 45,000 light years across.
In the same area of the sky are u. a. the galaxies NGC 4820 , NGC 4825 , NGC 4829 , NGC 4847 .
The object was discovered together with NGC 4820 and NGC 4829 in a single observation in 1882 by Ernst Wilhelm Leberecht Tempel , who noted "Quite close to the south [of N4825] are three more faint nebulae".
