NGC 4846 is a 13.7 likes bright barred spiral galaxy with an active galactic nucleus from Hubble type SBBC in the constellation of the hunting dogs at the northern sky . It is an estimated 205 million light years from the Milky Way and about 80,000 light years in diameter . Together with NGC 4914 and NGC 4868 , it forms the small galaxy group LGG 319.
In the same area of ​​the sky are the galaxies IC 3904 , IC 3914 , IC 3940 , IC 3967 .

The type IIn supernova SN 2008ip was observed here.

The object was discovered by John Herschel on March 11, 1831 .
