IC 3940 is a compact galaxy of Hubble type C in the constellation Canes Venatici the northern sky . It is estimated to be 500 million light years away from the Milky Way and has a diameter of around 60,000 ly.
In the same area of the sky are the galaxies NGC 4846 , IC 3966 , IC 3967 , IC 4028 .
The object was discovered by Max Wolf on March 21, 1903 .
