IC 3946 is a lenticular galaxy of the Hubble type S0 in the constellation Coma Berenices in the northern sky . It is an estimated 263 million light years away from the Milky Way and has a diameter of about 55,000 ly. The galaxy is considered a member of the Coma galaxy cluster Abell 1656 .
The galaxies IC 3947 , IC 3949 , IC 3957 , IC 3959 are located in the same area of the sky .
The object was discovered by Hermann Kobold on May 12, 1896 .
