Hermann Albert Kobold was the third of five children of the carpenter August Kobold and his wife Dorothea geb. Thinker. From 1877 to 1880 he studied mathematics and natural sciences at the University of Göttingen and received his doctorate in July 1880 under Wilhelm Klinkerfues on an astronomical topic. He then worked as an assistant at the private observatory of Nikolaus von Konkoly in O'Gyalla (Hungary). After participating in an expedition to observe the passage of Venus in Aiken (South Carolina) in 1882 , he worked on data reduction in Berlin for several years .

In 1887 Kobold was appointed as an observer at the observatory in Strasbourg . Shortly afterwards he married Dorothea Brandt, with whom he had five children. In 1888 he became a private lecturer and in 1900 an associate professor at the University of Strasbourg; two years later he went to Kiel University as an observer and associate professor . Through intensive observations, he succeeded in discovering 22 previously unknown, smaller galaxies of the Coma galaxy cluster .

From 1908 to 1938 he was the editor of the scientific journal Astronomische Nachrichten . His astronomical work deals with stellar astronomy and the objects of the solar system. He regularly compiled lists of comets.

In his honor, an asteroid discovered by Karl Wilhelm Reinmuth in 1930 was named (1164) Kobolda .

His grave is in the south cemetery in Kiel .
