Aiken is a city and also the administrative center ( the county seat ) of the Aiken County in the US -amerikanischen State South Carolina .
geography
Aiken lies at 33 ° 32'58 "north latitude and 81 ° 43'14" west longitude. At a distance of around 80 kilometers, Columbia is in a northeastern direction. Augusta is 20 kilometers away to the west. The northern boroughs are affected by Interstate 20 . The Savannah River flows 15 kilometers away and divides the states of South Carolina and Georgia to the west .
history
The city was named after William Aiken , President of the South Carolina Canal and Railroad Company, and was founded in 1835. After the American Civil War ended in 1870, wealthy citizens from Charleston and the regions further north began to use Aiken as a resort.
In 1950 the United States Atomic Energy Commission selected a site in the immediate vicinity of Aiken as the location for a facility for the production of basic materials for nuclear weapons . The facility was named Savannah River Plant , which was renamed Savannah River Site in 1989 .
