Aiken County is a county in the state of South Carolina in the United States . The county seat is Aiken .
geography
The county is located in western South Carolina, borders Georgia in the southwest and has an area of 2,798 square kilometers, of which 20 square kilometers are water. It is bordered in a clockwise direction by the following counties: Saluda County , Lexington County , Orangeburg County , Barnwell County , Burke County, Georgia, Richmond County, Georgia, and Edgefield County .
The county is part of the metropolitan area of Augusta .
history
Aiken County was formed on March 10, 1871 from parts of Bamberg County, Edgefield County, Lexington County and Orangeburg County. It was named after William Aiken sen. , the president of the South Carolina Canal and Railroad Company and father of William Aiken .
One place in the county has the status of a National Historic Landmark , the Graniteville Historic District . 38 buildings and sites in the county are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) (as of July 26, 2018).

According to the 2000 census , Aiken County had 142,552 people in 55,587 households and 39,411 families. The population density was 51 inhabitants per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 71.37 percent white, 25.56 percent African American, 0.40 percent Native American, 0.63 percent Asian, 0.03 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 0.83 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 1.18 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 2.12 percent of the population.
Of the 55,587 households, 33.1 percent had children under the age of 18 living with them. 53.3 percent were married couples living together, 13.8 percent were single mothers, 29.1 percent were non-families, 25.2 percent were single households and 9.2 percent had people aged 65 or over. The average household size was 2.53 and the average family size was 3.03.
26.2 percent of the population was under 18 years old. 8.8 percent between 18 and 24, 28.9 percent between 25 and 44, 23.3 percent between 45 and 64 and 12.8 percent were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females there were 92.9 males and for every 100 females age 18 and over there were 89.2 males.
The median income for a household in the city is $ 37,889 , and the median income for a family is $ 45,769. Males had a median income of $ 36,743 versus $ 23,810 for females. The per capita income was $ 18,772. 10.6 percent of families and 13.8 percent of the population are below the poverty line.

There are ten parishes in Aiken County, including three cities and seven towns . For statistical purposes, the US Census Bureau maintains six census-designated places that are subordinate to the county and are not self-governing. Like the Unincorporated Communities, these are unincorporated areas.
