McCormick County is a county in the US state of South Carolina in the United States . The county seat is McCormick .

The county is located in western South Carolina, borders Georgia to the southwest and has an area of ​​1020 square kilometers, of which 89 square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Abbeville County , Greenwood County , Edgefield County, and in Georgia by the following counties: Columbia County , Lincoln County, and Elbert Counties .

McCormick County was formed on February 19, 1916. It was named after Cyrus McCormick , an American inventor and entrepreneur of Scottish-Irish descent.

According to the 2000 census , McCormick County had 9,958 people in 3,558 households and 2,604 families. The population density was 11 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 44.78 percent white, 53.88 percent African American, 0.07 percent Native American, 0.29 percent Asian, 0.03 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 0.38 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 0.57 percent were descended from two or more races.
