McCormick County is a county in the US state of South Carolina in the United States . The county seat is McCormick .

The county is located in western South Carolina, borders Georgia to the southwest and has an area of 1020 square kilometers, of which 89 square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Abbeville County , Greenwood County , Edgefield County, and in Georgia by the following counties: Columbia County , Lincoln County, and Elbert Counties .
history
McCormick County was formed on February 19, 1916. It was named after Cyrus McCormick , an American inventor and entrepreneur of Scottish-Irish descent.

According to the 2000 census , McCormick County had 9,958 people in 3,558 households and 2,604 families. The population density was 11 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 44.78 percent white, 53.88 percent African American, 0.07 percent Native American, 0.29 percent Asian, 0.03 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 0.38 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 0.57 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 0.86 percent of the population.
Of the 3,558 households, 24.8 percent had children under the age of 18 living with them. 51.8 percent were married couples living together, 17.6 percent were single mothers, 26.8 percent were non-families, 24.4 percent were single households, and 10.2 percent had people aged 65 or over. The average household size was 2.39 and the average family size was 2.82 people.
19.5 percent of the population was under 18 years old. 8.3 percent between 18 and 24, 27.6 percent between 25 and 44, 28.1 percent between 45 and 64 and 16.5 percent were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 41 years. For every 100 females there were 113.7 males and for every 100 females age 18 and over there were 115.8 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $ 31,577 , and the median income for a family was $ 38,822. Males had a median income of $ 28,824 versus $ 21,587 for females. The per capita income was $ 14,770. 15.1 percent of families and 17.9 percent of the population were below the poverty line.
