Abbeville County is a county in the state of South Carolina in the United States . The county seat is Abbeville . The name of the district is derived from the French city of Abbeville .

The county is located in northwestern South Carolina, borders Georgia to the southwest and has an area of 1,324 square kilometers, of which 8 square kilometers are water. It is bordered in a clockwise direction by the following counties: Greenville County , Anderson County , Laurens County , Greenwood County , McCormick County, and Elbert County, Georgia. The county includes two settlement areas defined for statistical purposes ( census-designated place ): Antreville and Lake Secession .

Abbeville is located in a hilly foothills and is bounded in the southwest by Richard B. Russell Lake , which also forms the state border with Georgia. To the northeast, the county is closed off by the Saluda River . Calhoun Falls State Park is located on the lake, which was created by the damming of the Savannah River . Much of the area is covered by oak, hickory and pine forests. The southeast area is within the Sumter National Forests .

history

The country was a tribal area of the Cherokees when the first European settlers arrived in 1758. In 1777 the Cherokese signed a contract with Due West that provided for the cession of large areas of land to South Carolina. Abbeville County was formed from District 96 on March 12, 1785. It was named after the French city of Abbeville , from which many of the Huguenot settlers came. On January 1, 1800, the county was converted into a judicial district and has been an independent county again since April 16, 1868.

One place in the county has the status of a National Historic Landmark , the Burt-Stark Mansion . 15 buildings and sites in the county are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) (as of July 26, 2018).

Personalities

John C. Calhoun , the 7th Vice President of the United States from 1825 to 1832 under Presidents John Quincy Adams and Andrew Jackson, longtime US Senator and Secretary of State under President John Tyler, was from Abbeville County.

As of the 2000 census , Abbeville County had 26,167 people in 10,131 households and 7,284 families. The population density was 20 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 68.33 percent white, 30.29 percent African American, 0.10 percent Native American, 0.23 percent Asian, 0.03 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 0.31 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 0.71 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 0.83 percent of the population.

Of the 10,131 households, 31.7 percent had children under the age of 18 living with them. 52.2 percent were married couples living together, 15.3 percent were single mothers, 28.1 percent were not families, 25.3 percent were single households, and 11.3 percent were living with people aged 65 or over. The average household size was 2.51 and the average family size was 3.00 people.

25.3 percent of the population was under 18 years old. 9.5 percent between 18 and 24, 26.7 percent between 25 and 44, 23.8 percent between 45 and 64 and 14.7 percent were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females there were 92.1 males and for every 100 females age 18 and over there were 88 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $ 32,635 , and the median income for a family is $ 38,847. Males had a median income of $ 30,452 versus $ 21,045 for females.
